SUGARING

vs

Waxing

  • Clients who prefer sugaring say that sugaring hurts less than waxing.
  • Sugaring is more natural and gentle on the skin.
  • Sugar is a paste made from sugar, citric acid, and water. It’s a great, alternative to waxing!
  • The melting point of sugar is lower than wax, therefore it does not feel as hot on your skin.

  • If your hair is longer, very thick, or if you have coarse hair, the sugaring process can take longer and may be more painful. Consult your Aesthetician in the room for the best process moving forward. Once your hair thins, sugaring may be a great option.
  • Waxing techniques tend to be faster on large surface areas (i.e. legs, back, chest, arms).
  • Waxing is more cost effective.

Both Sugaring and Waxing are excellent hair removal methods!

If you are waxing or sugaring, the goal is always to remove the hair at the root (or the bulb). That’s where the magic happens. It is the spot that stunts the hair growth, damages the hair follicles in a very controlled fashion, and creates the least painful hair removal process for consistent hair removal.

There are many hair removal salons out there that will say either only wax or only sugar. At The Wax Room Salem, we invite you to try both and figure out what is best for your particular hair removal needs.

Benefits of Sugaring

What is Sugaring?

Sugaring hair removal uses a sticky, gel-like paste to remove hair. It is safe, natural, and uses no additives. It is applied “against” the direction of hair growth and is then removed “in” the direction of the hair growth. Sugaring doesn’t stick to the top layer of the skin, it doesn’t pull at live skin cells. Instead, it removes the hair from the root (the bulb at the end of the hair), making it especially effective for ingrown or curly hair.

What is the aftercare of Sugaring?

For the next 24-48 hours avoid the following on the waxed areas:

  • use of exfoliating products (Alpha-Hydroxy Acid (AHA) products, scrubs, etc.)
  • direct sun exposure, tanning beds, spray tanning
  • creams with fragrance or ingredients that may irritate
  • deodorant: if you are sugaring your underarms
  • wearing tight clothing
  • excessive heat, such as hot tubs and saunas.
    hot showers
  • exercise
  • touching the freshly sugared area

After 48 hours, regular exfoliation with a scrub will help keep skin soft and prevent ingrown hairs. Apply an SPF 30 or greater sunscreen to any exposed sugared areas. Since sugaring exfoliates as well as removes hair, your skin will be more prone to sunburn in the days following your sugaring service.

Is Sugaring Painful?

Everybody’s pain tolerance is different, and all types of hair removal are somewhat uncomfortable however, sugaring clients do say it is greatly reduced in comparison to traditional waxing. The paste does not adhere to the skin, and generally hurts much less than other forms of hair removal, some clients says as little as half the discomfort waxing.

How long does my hair have to be to get Sugared?

The length of the hair should be approximately 1/4″ or longer (about the size of your bottom eyelash) If you have been shaving you need a minimum of 3 weeks of growth which is usually sufficient, but longer is fine, too. If you’ve been waxing or sugaring, you will want to wait your 3-6 weeks in between your appointment.
